What is the most common type of personality disorder?

The most common type of personality disorder is Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Researchers suggest that it affects one to two percent of the American population. Borderline personality disorder manifests through strong and quickly changing emotions, fear of being alone or abandoned, difficulties maintaining relationships, and feelings of hollowness most of the time. Patients appear to be confused and impulsive in a damaging way.

Some people with BPD can resort to self-harm and suicidal ideation in extreme cases. They manifest emotional instability characterized by extreme feelings of rage, shame, sorrow, terror, or panic. Most people with this condition view situations as black or white without room for grey areas. Some people with this disorder may abuse drugs and substances or misuse prescription drugs.
