Who can diagnose a substance use disorder?

Most mental health professionals, including psychologists, psychiatrists, or licensed drug counselors, can diagnose substance use disorders. There are 11 criteria for drug addiction diagnosis as detailed by DSM-5. These include:

  • Drug cravings

  • Quitting activities you once enjoyed

  • Experiencing physical problems and psychological problems

  • An increase in the frequency of using a drug

  • Failed attempts to cut back or quit using a drug

  • A sudden increase in the quantity of drug intake and extended usage

  • Withdrawal symptoms when you stop using a drug

  • Neglecting responsibilities

  • Conflicts or damaged relationships because of a particular drug

  • Using a drug in harmful ways, for example, overdosing
