Introduction

Dr. Andrea Cooper, Ph.D. is a licensed Clinical Psychologist equipped with extensive training and clinical experience in helping individuals navigate and overcome a wide range of psychological concerns, life transitions, and interpersonal challenges. In her therapeutic work, Dr. Cooper provides a safe, nonjudgmental space and seeks to empower her clients through their deepening insights into the complex factors maintaining their psychological difficulties and defeating patterns. Dr. Cooper helps her clients connect more deeply, mindfully, and compassionately with themselves as well as better understand their emotions and resolve their painful histories. In her work, Dr. Cooper holds in frame the whole person of the client as deeply intertwined with the cultural context, intersectional identities, and social systems through which one relates. Her clinical work is tailored to the needs of her clients and informed by evidence-based and trauma focused interventions from Psychodynamic Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement and Desensitization Processing (EMDR), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) with an integration of mindfulness and self-compassion approaches. Dr. Cooper completed her Bachelor’s (B.A.) in Psychology from James Madison University in Virginia and then went on to specialize in Mental Health Counseling with a Master’s (M.S.Ed.) from Fordham University in New York City. She further earned her Master’s (M.A.) and Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University in New York. Dr. Cooper’s wide-ranging clinical experiences include working with diverse populations across New York City at university counseling centers, community mental health centers, and Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital’s adult psychiatric inpatient unit. She completed her predoctoral clinical internship at Ohio University’s Counseling and Psychological Services where she provided individual and group therapy, clinical supervision, and crisis intervention. During this year, she integrated in-depth apprenticeship study in the areas of antiracism and social justice into her clinical training. Regarding her doctoral research, Dr. Cooper’s dissertation focused on understanding the psychological impact of women’s experiences in disaffiliating from Protestant fundamentalist religion, and she continues to specialize in the area of religious trauma. Most recently, Dr. Cooper completed her postdoctoral fellowship at Columbus Women’s Wellness where she advanced her training in women’s behavioral health, perinatal mental health, and clinical interventions for those who have experienced trauma.
