Introduction

Imagine each aspect of ourselves is represented by a piece of spaghetti. Out of the box, we can control dry pieces of spaghetti and line them up neatly. Since uncooked spaghetti is not very interesting, we boil it, and it tangles up into something like life. This can look like a mess and be hard to make sense of. While it's not as easy to straighten out cooked spaghetti, it can be done; one noodle at a time. As a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC), I like to explore a life through family history, personal experience, and beliefs we have about the world and ourselves. It is important to identify strengths and values, look at difficult events, and believe in the power to steer our own lives. I focus on later adolescence through early adulthood, roughly, ages 18 to 35. This stretch of life is full of transitions. While exciting, it can be harder than expected. We can get stuck under the rubble of our families, past experiences, and bad habits. It may feel like we can't change how we are feeling today, but don't worry, you already have all the tools you'll need to get through. For clients who are interested in an intensive and structured trauma treatment, I use Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). CPT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps identify the events that have hurt us and how it has changed the way we see the world and ourselves. CPT looks at thoughts and beliefs that keep us from moving forward. CPT lasts 8 to 12 sessions, has homework, and takes commitment, but it is evidence-based in reducing the symptoms trauma. I attended a training under Kathleen M. Chard, Ph.D., a co-developer of CPT, and use the program's manual and intervention tools. The drawings on this site are originals, by me.
