David Foster is a Licensed Psychologist who was born and raised in Missouri. He has always enjoyed helping people, so he decided to study psychology. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Rehabilitation Psychology and his Master of Science degree in Psychology, both from UCM. As part of his educational training, Mr. Foster worked at a community mental health center in Kansas City, gaining experience with individuals who were chronically mentally ill, as well as helping in the outpatient clinic and the children’s program. After graduation, he began his career in an inpatient rehabilitation environment, working several years with patients who had incurred neurologic impairments. This experience included supporting grieving loved ones as they coped with the life changes their families had experienced. Since 1997, Mr. Foster has been employed in an educational setting, working with students (and their families) who struggle with many different issues. Common concerns include unhealthy relationships, low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, grief/loss, trauma, academic struggles, behavioral concerns, and substance use. Mr. Foster believes in a strengths-based approach when working with people and he has a passion for encouraging and helping clients recognize their intrinsic value. His therapeutic foundation is in cognitive-based therapies, but his specific skillset combines the techniques of the client-centered approach of Motivational Interviewing together with the principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Mr. Foster is just as intrigued with the field of psychology now as he was back in college, always reading and expanding his knowledge base. Currently, he is finalizing the process to obtain a new certification as an SEP (Somatic Experiencing Practitioner), after completing a three-year training process. This therapy modality provides a bottom-up approach to addressing trauma, and it incorporates a more holistic approach to working with the individual, compared with other types of therapy.
