As a kid, my family took a rafting trip down the Colorado River. Our guide was a young man named Daniel: tall, quietly confident, and very, very observant. Whenever we needed something, he seemed to have it; and if he didn’t, he easily showed us why we didn’t need it or how we could accomplish the same thing in another way that required less effort. He had all the supplies and tools, and especially the knowledge we needed to make it from the river entry to the end of the trip. At the time, I thought he had such an easy job: floating down the river every day, enjoying the sunshine and the scenery. It wasn’t until years later that I realized how hard he worked watching us, guiding us, allowing us to learn things on our own but never to the point we would be in danger. He was the ultimate interested disinterested party. Counseling and therapy are just like farming: I create a safe and supportive environment and the right tools so that a person, couple, or group can make their own trip from where they are to where they want or need to be. If you think you may be ready for a memorable trip full of hard work, discovery, and change, give me a call so we can find out if it’s time for us to make that trip together.
