Talk therapy can be hard for people with trauma histories. My clinical approaches focus on Neurodevelopmental Art Therapy (NDAT), and Mindfulness-Based Art Therapy (MBAT), and the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model. Body-based results of trauma and emotions are stored in the right hemisphere, rather than in the left hemisphere which is active in talk therapy. Activation of the right hemisphere often happens through expressive non-verbal art therapy and allows access to stored physical and emotional traumatic memories, sensations, feelings, and thoughts which can then be expressed in visual form - and can be more easily talked about. As a board certified art therapist, I use art media, the creative process, and resulting artwork to help individuals, couples and families process trauma, reduce anxiety and depression, manage addictions, develop self-awareness, address unresolved emotional conflicts, improve social skills, and build self-esteem. Artistic skill is not required! Therapeutic change happens when there is trust and connection between therapist and client in a safe, supportive, and judgment-free environment. I am in private practice and am an outpatient provider for Kaiser Redwood City.
