I consider my work as a therapist an art and science requiring creativity and skill. I emphasize rapport, trust, and relationship which allows me to best apply my clinical training and paves the way for growth and desired change. Each person is unique; by taking the time to get to know my clients, together we can explore interventions that are best suited to one's individual needs. While facets of DBT, CBT, Motivational Interviewing etc. resonate with me and are sometimes employed in my approach to help foster desired change, I work primarily with a psychoanalytic approach and am adamant about helping clients increase their capacity for insight into themselves. I believe that cultivating mindfulness is essential for improving the quality of one’s life. The first step is always to improve self-awareness. Once you are able to identify maladaptive patterns in thought and behavior; we can work together to discover the best avenue of change for you. Coping skills are life hacks specific to an individual that can help with external stress factors out of one’s control. Examples of this may be working on boundaries with loved ones, or knowing the lifespan of your social battery. Internal sources of distress, like cognitive distortions, may also be identified and addressed. I’m mindful of not enabling avoidant or indulgent behavior, and will help you strike a balance between identifying when prioritizing self is important, and when certain behaviors and mindsets need an outside perspective to cultivate healthy interpersonal relationships. Many things can feel “right” and “safe”, yet they are still defenses preventing us from growth, diminishing the quality of life experience. I moonlight as an artist and writer and have a BFA in painting. I feel that my creativity supports my clients with desired change; thinking outside the box is what often leads to insight and innovation. Gardening and living in flow with seasonal energy is a facet of my lifestyle, and I love nature as much as I delight in city-living.
