Introduction

Therapy can often be an intimidating space for people, so as a cis-Black male therapist, my theoretical orientation/approach to therapy is from a liberation and social justice lens, working through an anti-oppressive framework, which is trauma-informed, to make clients feel a sense of belonging while working with me. In working from a Liberation Psychology lens, I am able to better assist clients from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other intentionally marginalized backgrounds in identifying and managing anxieties and other stressors/mental health needs from their experiences of oppression, trauma, and other sociopolitical factors. In doing so, my hope is to help with reducing the feeling of hopelessness while addressing their needs. Continuing, I value holding space when needed and helping my clients work toward the social and emotional goals they have set. It is of great importance to advocate for my clients when they need advocating, whether in sessions or out of sessions through social activism, advocation in school or job settings, or empowering them to advocate for themselves. In my work, children, adolescents, adults, and couples, through intentional relationship building, are provided a safe and respectful space where they can be fully autonomous people and experience compassion while working toward their goals. Furthermore, I utilize a mix of play therapy, art therapy, as well as talk therapy, when working with children and adolescents, while also collaborating with their parents and other professionals to ensure all of my client’s needs were being met. I have extensive experience utilizing CBT, ACT, ERP, and other evidenced based frameworks while working with clients of many groups and ages, who may experience a wide range of behavioral and emotional concerns, such as anxiety, stress, ADHD, low self-esteem, difficulty with life transitions, trauma, depression, grief/loss, academic exploration, relational issues, and attachment disorders. I hope through working together that the journey to rewriting your story begins to feel less lonely and less overwhelming. I will do my best to consistently help navigate the therapeutic process with you.
