My background is unconventional, and I've been told that this often shows in my approach. As a mental health professional with extensive experience in education, I recognize the complex social, emotional, and cognitive challenges faced by today’s young people and, by extension, those who care for them. Social media, civil discord, education policy, and other factors have made everything just plain harder for kids. A combination of lived experience and formal training allows me to be responsive to the needs of clients of all ages, while also drawing from best practices grounded in research. For example, while I am skilled in CBT and believe in its effectiveness, I also know that CBT is less helpful for individuals in the neurodivergent community and other methods should be explored. However, in all cases, I provide care that is culturally humble, trauma-informed, non-judgmental, collaborative, and strength-based. This nuanced understanding is what I bring to my work with young people, families, and educators as we confront ordinary developmental challenges in these extraordinary times.
