You may have learned to compensate for your challenges by adopting various strategies like masking, people pleasing, and perfectionism. You may think other people have similar struggles but are just better at handling them. On average it can take 17 years to diagnose ADHD, and it takes even longer in women, older adults, and members of marginalized groups. People with undiagnosed/untreated ADHD mistakenly blame themselves for being lazy, too sensitive, defective, and perpetually unworthy. They are constantly apologizing: Sorry I didn't get it done; sorry I am late; sorry my house is a mess; sorry I lost my temper (my keys, my phone, my purse); sorry I forgot; sorry I was distracted. Self-blame and endless apologies can lead to paralyzing shame. Shame can trigger isolation, crippling anxiety, defensiveness, anger, irritability, mood disorder, self-medicating behaviors, and more. In therapy we will foster opportunities for you to learn to see and unconditionally accept yourself. I trust your internal wisdom and believe you deserve to live fully without exhaustion, shame, guilt, and resentment. My approach fosters self-compassion to help free you of the societal expectations that lead to burnout, disconnecting from your body, anxiety, low self-esteem, and distrusting your own gut. When you learn to recognize your own strengths, instead of being held back by shame, you can set healthy limits in your relationships; develop balance between work, life, rest and play; foster creativity; and strengthen your intuition. I embody Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy (NAT). NAT is a form of therapy designed to empower neurodivergent individuals using a holistic approach. NAT fosters an environment of acceptance and understanding, is grounded in research and clinical practice tailored to the needs of each client, views the client as an active participant in the therapy process, and seeks to nurture the client's strengths and skills.
