In Dr. Scott Peck's book The Road Less Traveled (1978), he made the statement that life is difficult. He went on to say that once we accept that life is difficult we can transcend the difficulties by acknowledging them and accepting them without making excuses or giving them permission. It was after I read Dr. Peck's book that I made a decision to not only address the difficulties in my own life, but to develop an approach to helping others that would help them as well. Through my education and experience, I have learned that many of the difficulties we encounter, such as substance abuse, relationship discord, mood instability, and a variety of other maladaptive coping styles result from traumatic experiences. Trauma can produce a level of psychic pain that can potentially block out any other experiences, but the pain. I blend psychodynamic theories with several cognitive approaches to help my clients work through the trauma, gain more emotional regulation, and establish coping strategies that create a life worth living.
