Introduction

The perinatal period (before, during, and after pregnancy) can be exciting, stressful, scary, joyful, happy, sad, and everything in between. In addition to physiological and hormonal shifts, the perinatal time is one of huge psychological and social change. And that can feel like a lot. While positive AND negative feelings are normal and common during the perinatal time, if your emotions or thoughts are getting in the way of connecting with your baby or others or making it hard to function in your life then the support of this practice might be right for you. Most commonly, individuals come to this practice to prepare for pregnancy in the context of mental health issues or to have support for perinatal depression and anxiety, infertility, pregnancy loss, adoption, birth trauma, a history of being perinatal during the pandemic, or support for the parental transition up to 3 years postpartum. With Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, problem-solving, mindfulness practice, and medication, the goal of care is help and healing through your perinatal journey. While not all clients want or need medication, medication can be a supportive tool during the perinatal period for many people. Together, we review the most current data, weigh risks and benefits, and develop an individualized approach for you. Also, during care, every client develops a Whole Health (WH) plan. With you at the center, your WH plan addresses all of the elements that we know impact health, such as community, food, relationships, and surroundings. We align your values and what is important to you with your health care goals and identify additional resources to support you. If you need immediate care, call the Maternal Mental Health Hotline @ 1-833-852-6262. Help is there for you. Danielle Schuman-Olivier, DNP, PMHNP, CNM is a certified IFS therapist, mindfulness teacher, nurse-midwife, and psychiatric mental health nurse-practitioner. Her doctoral work was on incorporating a Whole Health approach into clinical practice. She has been encouraging, supporting, and empowering perinatal families since 2002.
