Introduction

Dr. Sheryl Pierre is a licensed clinical psychologist. Her work with clients involves building skills and strategies from a variety of cognitive behavioral approaches, including Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT); Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), to create an individualized approach to meet each client’s goals. Dr. Pierre works with adolescents, young adults, and adults helping them to build skills to better navigate changes and decisions in the context of a warm, accepting therapeutic environment. Self-expression, self-confidence, and self-efficacy are emphasized in her therapeutic work. Sessions actively focus on building a variety of skills and promoting their effective use in daily life. Dr. Pierre has training and experience working with members of the LGBTQIA+ community including clients who are questioning and coming to acceptance of their sexual orientation and gender identity and those navigating the decision to come out to family and others, and with parents working toward acceptance of their children. Dr. Pierre also works with clients needing letters for gender affirming medical treatments. Dr. Pierre has a passion for the health and integrity of people, animals, and the environment. This personal focus led to a career enhanced path into Humane Education between graduate school and clinical practice. In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Pierre enjoys teaching within the Animals and Human Health certificate program of the Institute for Human-Animal Connection within the Graduate School of Social Work of the University of Denver (online) and the Anthrozoology Master’s program of Canisius College (online). The goals of Humane Education are to equip learners with tools for critical thinking and developing solutions to foster human rights, animal protection, and environmental ethics. Dr. Pierre brings this strong social justice orientation to her clinical work involving enhancing personal dignity and personal growth to support compassion, respect, and empathy not only for oneself but also for others with whom we share the environment and the environment.
