Sophie Newman uses a creative, culturally-attuned, and systemic therapeutic approach to provide access to healing for those seeking support through therapy. Prior to becoming a therapist, Sophie developed expertise in religion/religious trauma, conflict de-escalation, family dynamics, and neurodivergence. Holding the belief that healthy relationships must be built on a foundation of trust, she strives to provide an environment where humans from all walks of life feel welcome. As a therapist, Sophie seeks to empower clients to create and share their own meaning of life’s experiences, while also challenging them through compassion, curiosity, and humor. Using an active, directive, and collaborative approach, she hopes to be a resource for her clients by partnering with them on their therapeutic journey. Additionally, bringing her own life experiences and education to the therapy room to help clients harness the tools they need to be the healthiest version of themselves. Grounded in Experiential Family Therapy and Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT), Sophie utilizes creative interventions (i.e. art, meditation, writing) to foster emotional congruence and identify cycles of interaction. While she enjoys working with a variety of concerns, she specializes in working with individuals and relationship systems that struggle with desire, intimacy, and sexuality. Her expertise in lifespan human development helps her provide clients with a holistic understanding of the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes that may occur throughout life transitions (i.e. aging, grief/loss, parenting and illness). Sophie completed graduate training in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) from Mercer University Medical School and undergraduate training in Human Development and Family Science from University of Georgia. Additionally, she is currently a member of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT) and working toward her sex therapy certification. Sophie receives clinical supervision from Erika Pluhar, PhD, EdS, LMFT, LPC, CST-S. Sophie enjoys spending time learning at book club, sharing meals with friends and family, laughing at a comedy show, and raving about radishes. She lives in Decatur with her partner and her large hound mix, Arwyn. You can often find her outdoors soaking up the sunshine, at the High Museum of Art enjoying the latest exhibit, or writing a movie review on Letterboxd.
