Does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is used to treat a wide range of mental health problems. It has positive effects on people with anxiety disorders. It has been found to reduce anxiety and stress among students with academic concerns about their ability to perform in class. Research suggests that ACT helps relieve symptoms of social anxiety. Other studies have shown that ACT improves the quality of life for people with chronic pain.

A study of the use of ACT on cancer patients showed that it led to increased self-acceptance and finding meaning in life even though the patients were still experiencing pain. ACT has been found to reduce the severity of depression symptoms among veterans experiencing severe depression and suicidal ideation. Meanwhile, qualitative research showed that ACT is as effective as conventional treatments for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Lastly, ACT is effective in the treatment of eating disorders.
