Research indicates that it takes between 8 to 15 weeks for art therapy to work on patients who are dealing with trauma. Art therapy results in a substantial reduction of trauma symptoms. It is also associated with a reduction in stress among clients with depression. Art therapy improves the self-image, quality of life, and the ability of cancer patients to deal with a wide range of stressors. The studies indicate that art therapy is most beneficial if it lasts long.
Art therapy is also effective in moderating stress and burnout among workers. Meanwhile, studies on clients with personality disorders indicated that art therapy improves self-image and enables them to reflect and regulate their thoughts, behaviors, and feelings during therapy sessions. However, more investigations are required to determine the validity of these claims.
