Why do children bully?

Children bully for various reasons, from lacking attention at home to feeling superior to others. Regardless, bullying can affect the mental health of the victim and make them feel insecure and angry.

Many reasons could lead to a kid being bullied. Some include:

  • Trying to fit in. Mostly happens when they see another kid do it and get positive results. This prompts them to do it in order to fit in.

  • Feeling powerless. This leads them to act up to compensate for their inadequacy. They may also do it to get attention because they see adults react.

  • They are victims of bullying. They may bully other kids to re-establish their self-worth and power, which can only be earned by putting another person in a similar situation they went through.

  • Oblivious of the harm caused. Kids rarely know when their actions are causing harm to others or the line they are not supposed to cross when interacting with peers.

It is important to understand that bullying can be detrimental to the victim and should therefore be addressed promptly.
