The four main issues in a divorce are:
Parental rights and responsibilities. If the marriage produced any children, custody and visitation rights must be determined for each parent and child.
Division of property. This is how real property, such as homes, bank accounts, retirement funds, and other items of value, are separated between the two parties in the divorce.
Child support. Generally, the non-custodial parent pays the custodial parent a monthly child support payment to help in the costs of raising the child. The amount is usually a percentage of the non-custodial parent's income.
Spousal support. If one partner has supported the other partner throughout the marriage, they might be required to continue to support them for a set period of time after the divorce. This is generally a monthly payment.
