What is the most common psychotic disorder?

The most common psychotic disorder is schizophrenia. When schizophrenia is active, a person may experience symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech, trouble with thinking, and more.

Many people confuse schizophrenia due to its complexity. In fact, many people believe that schizophrenia is considered split-personality or multiple personality.

However, schizophrenia is a separate disorder. Additionally, most people with schizophrenia are not any more dangerous or violent than those living in the general population, and people who are schizophrenic typically live with their family, in group homes, or on their own.

Currently, there is no cure for schizophrenia. However, research is leading to more effective and safer treatments for individuals diagnosed with this condition. Not only that, but current treatments enable individuals living with this condition to minimize symptoms and improve the likelihood of low recurrence.

According to research, schizophrenia affects men and women relatively equally but there may be an earlier onset for males.

It is believed that schizophrenia can be due to a number of genetic and environmental factors. Additionally, life stressors can play a role in the start of symptoms and the course they take. However, since it appears that multiple factors play a role, scientists are not able to determine the exact cause in each individual case.
